Timing belt vs timing chain — what is the difference?

The timing belt (or chain) synchronises the crankshaft and camshaft so the engine valves open and close at exactly the right moments. The difference is in how that synchronisation is achieved:

Timing chain — a metal chain running in oil. Designed to last the life of the engine in most circumstances. We covered timing chain replacement in a separate post.Timing belt — a reinforced rubber or composite belt running dry. Will wear and stretch with age and heat, and needs scheduled replacement.

Which Volkswagen Golfs have timing belts?

The general rule with VW Golfs:

1.4L, 1.8L and 2.0L TSI (petrol) engines — timing chain (typically Mk5 onwards)2.0L TDI (newer diesel) — timing chain1.6L petrol (older models) — timing belt1.9L TDI diesel (Mk4 and Mk5 era) — timing belt1.6L TDI diesel — timing belt

If your VW Golf is older than around 2010, or has a 1.6 petrol or 1.9 TDI engine, there is a strong chance you have a timing belt that needs scheduled replacement.

Why timing belt replacement is critical

A Volkswagen Golf with a timing belt uses what is known as an interference engine — meaning the pistons and valves share the same space at different points in the engine cycle. If a timing belt snaps or jumps, the pistons hit the valves, and the result is severe internal engine damage:

Signs your VW Golf timing belt needs attention

A timing belt does not always give warning before it fails — which is why scheduled replacement matters. But there are signs worth watching for:
